The November middle school fundraiser was a resounding success! Not only did they reach their goal, but they exceeded it! The fundraiser will help with classroom activities, gold card prizes, and morale boosters throughout the year. Mr. Barhorst's sixth graders were this year's top fundraisers and earned a pizza party for their collective effort! Thank you to everyone who helped make our first-ever middle school November Giving a success!

National Honor Society Inducts New Members By Allison Wygal December 12, 2024 The West Liberty-Salem Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) inducted 26 new members on Wednesday, December 11th. This year’s inductees included four seniors and 22 juniors. Kennedy Wallace served as the Master of Ceremonies, and the theme of the ceremony was “Go for the Gold.” NHS President Akira Whitman delivered the opening remarks, encouraging members to challenge their character, serve and lead within their school and community, and carry these values forward into their futures. Her words inspired the students to view NHS membership not just as a resume booster, but as an opportunity to embrace and live out the organization’s core values. Next, current NHS members presented the four core values that guide the organization: Leadership, Scholarship, Service, and Character. These values are central to the selection of new members. The presentations were as follows: Leadership was introduced by Quentin Rudolph, Scholarship by Londyn Loveless, Service by Ava Chamberlain, and Character by Taran Logwood. Each speaker shared examples of how these values are used by leaders to inspire change and foster responsibility. Senior member Luke McGill introduced the 26 new NHS members, and Isabella Hardwick and Daniel Neer presented them with their Gold Cords and certificates. The Gold Cords will be worn again at graduation to symbolize their NHS membership. Middle School Principal Andy McGill closed the ceremony with a challenge to both new inductees and current members. He urged them to use NHS and other organizations they’re involved in to further develop themselves and their communities, emphasizing the importance of advancing the four pillars of NHS. “Go out and make a difference but someday come back because you are the leaders who keep a good community going,” McGill said. He encouraged the students to exceed expectations and explore what’s possible. The ceremony concluded with a reception featuring light refreshments, hosted by senior members Teagan Boyd, Alaina Irving, and Maddie McGill. Special thanks to NHS members Greyson Horsley and Aaron Campbell for setting up the lighting for the evening. National Honor Society Officers are: President – Akira Whitman Vice – President – Isabella Hardwick Secretary – Londyn Loveless Treasurer – Quentin Rudolph Historian – Daniel Neer Parliamentarian – Greyson Horsley New Members are: Seniors Caleb Hershberger Illa Kerns Samantha King Myla Thornburg Juniors Ava Astorino Brock Burgel Naomi Cole Geneva Estep Gavyn Greehill Breece Gullett Lyndee Harrison Alexis Hausler Kamdon Hissong Addison Hutton Brady Kauffman Dylan King Caleb Larson Emery Longaberger Wyatt Longaberger Brevin Louden Levi Miller Reese Oder Sadie Paul Emma Smith Abbie Thoman Garrett Wallen

At the end of November, sophomores traveled to Cincinnati to see a performance of Twelfth Night after studying the play in English class. This production offered a dystopian twist on the Shakespeare classic, featuring plenty of disguises, romance, and hijinks. It was the second time WL-S students have visited Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, a renowned playhouse in downtown Cincinnati. They were fortunate to attend one of the final performances of Twelfth Night before the company embarks on a tour to Prague, Czech Republic!

The Elementary Student Council hosted their annual Holiday Staff Appreciation Breakfast this morning. Featuring breakfast casseroles, pastries, a yogurt bar, juice, milk, and coffee, teachers, administrators, and staff enjoyed a hearty meal to start their day on a cold morning. This long-standing tradition, held each year before the holiday break, allows the student council to express their gratitude and appreciation. A big thank you to the Student Council for organizing this wonderful holiday tradition!

Today’s Elementary Spelling Bee was an exciting showcase for our very talented 4th and 5th grade spellers, featuring eight 4th graders and eight 5th graders. After 22 rounds, the competition culminated with a victory for Ozzy Anders, a 5th grader, who emerged as the Spelling Bee champion and Calvin Cotrell, 5th grader, was runner up! The final rounds were close and exciting, but the word "diablo" proved to be the challenge, securing Ozzy’s victory. His perfect spelling earned him the top spot and the honor of advancing to the Regional Qualifier. As the champion, Ozzy will now prepare for an online spelling and vocabulary test in February, where he will compete for a chance to qualify for the Regional Spelling Bee.
