West Liberty-Salem FFA hosted the first soil judging contest of the year on Tuesday, September 10th. They hosted neighboring districts Mechanicsburg, Triad and Graham at the Urbana Wildlife Area on Game Farm Road. This first contest is a great experience for new members to understand the process of judging and get hands on field experience. Our students and FFA teacher Mrs. Trista Havens ended the contest with lunch at the Mad River Farm Market! It was a great day!

We had a great first week of school! The weather was just nice enough for high school students to eat lunch outside. Middle school band filled the halls with music, elementary students found their way around after the long summer break, and our therapy dog Melvin is getting the library ready for students!

LAST CALL FOR VACCINATION CLINIC TOMORROW! Community Health and Wellness Partners School Based Health Center will offer a vaccination clinic at school during the school day on Tuesday, Sept. 10th from 8am - 3pm. Incoming 7th and 12th graders can get their required vaccines on this day but you must schedule an appointment. To schedule an appointment, please call 937-599-1411. Overview of vaccine requirements: Incoming 7th grade students must have one dose of meningococcal (MCV4) and one dose of TDAP (Tetanus, Diptheria, and Pertusis) prior to 7th grade entry. Incoming 12th grade students must have a minimum of one meningococcal or 2 doses of meningococcal if the first dose was given before the age of 16 and prior to 12th grade entry.

The Logan County Family and Children First Council will hold early childhood development screenings on October 17th, from 2-6 PM. If you'd like more information, please call 937-292-3065.

Congratulations to our 2024-2025 Homecoming Court and Attendants! Our senior Homecoming Queen Candidates are Teagan Boyd Ava Chamberlain, Isabella Hardwick, Alaina Irving, Ava Johnson, and Londyn Loveless. Our senior Homecoming King Candidates include Silas Kauffman, Taran Logwood, Luke McGill, Teagon Miller, Isaiah Reames, and Max Rudolph. And our homecoming attendants are: Junior Attendant - Ava Astorino Sophomore Attendant - Grace Jones Freshman Attendant - Ellery Wygal The Homecoming Parade Grand Marshal is June Seymour, High School Art Teacher. Homecoming festivities will kick off on Thursday evening at 6:30 for the parade followed by the community bonfire. On Friday, the homecoming ceremony will begin at 6:10 at Tiger Stadium. Hello WL-S Families, First, thank you all for a great start to the 2024-25 school year!  Tomorrow will be the first day with all students arriving/departing at the same time due to the elementary staggard start that occurred on the first 3 days of school this week.  Traffic will increase tomorrow during arrival and dismissal times, so I wanted to take a moment and review traffic patterns that should be followed while on campus. If you are a parent/grandparent/guardian, dropping off students in either the main drop-off loop or in the MS/HS drop off loop or a student driver, PLEASE REMEMBER the following: If you are arriving to school from the South, or from Urbana, always use the South Entrance, the first entrance you come to in front of the school. I have seen a few students and parents using the North entrance. The problem with using the North drive when arriving from the South is that cars turning into the school often must wait for traffic from the North before they can enter. This creates a backup on the main school drive because cars exiting the school cannot turn left back onto 68 due to traffic from the South waiting to turn into school. This causes everything to back up to the four way stop and creates even more wait time for everyone. Traffic has been heavy each morning this week. To avoid heavier traffic, arrive to the school before 7:25 AM.  Doors open at 7:25 and students are welcome to wait outside until the bell rings beginning at 7:15 AM. If you use the MS/HS drop off loop, always pull forward as far as you can to let students out. If the entrance to the loop is backed up to the main drive, then please utilize the parking spaces located in the middle of the drop off loop. This will allow traffic to continue to flow out on the main drive. Never leave your call parked in the drop-off loops in the morning. If you must exit your car, please use the parking spots located in front of the main drop off loop or in the middle of the MS/HS drop off loop. Elementary students being dropped off, should use the main drop-off loop unless they have a sibling in the MS or HS and the students are all getting dropped-off together. Please be sure to have your driver’s license/ID with you when you arrive to sign-out your elementary student at the end of the day so that our staff can verify your identification. Rosemary Sokolow took 1st place in the 45kg 13 and under division contributing overall to best female team in the state with Clean Slate Weightlifting. She also took home a silver medal in the women’s open division 45kg and under with a total of 37kg! Great work, Rosemary!

The 2023-2024 High School yearbook is packed with more than 100 pages of memories! Order forms will be passed out to students on Thursday, September 5th and are also available in the office. Year books are $40 with cash or check made payable to WLS. Deadline is Sept 16 for pre order.

Students completed a cup stacking challenge in Mrs. Fullenkamp's 8th grade science class today. They could only use one rubber band attached to a string to stack their cups. This activity required them to work together to achieve a difficult goal. Communication and teamwork are critical to successfully completing labs in her class this year and students are off to a great start. Mrs. Fullenkamp shared that they had a lot of laughs today! Keep it up, 8th grade!

Dahlia Sokolow broke two state records at the Ohio Weightlifting State Championships in the 64kg 13 and under division. She broke the clean and jerk state record by 1 kilo lifting 63kg, and the total state record by 1 kilo lifting a total of 113kg. Lifting for Clean Slate Weightlifting team, she also contributed to winning best overall female team in the state. Congratulations, Dahlia!!

"Each sunrise brings a new day with new hopes for a new beginning." Seniors gathered at Tiger Stadium at 6:45 this morning to enjoy Senior Sunrise, the first official senior activity of the year. They enjoyed donuts, juice, and catching up with friends. They will end the year with senior sunset just before graduation. Make memories, seniors! And have a great year!

Melvin is ready for his first day of school and has a new backpack to prove it! Your students will meet a new staff member this year, and they will certainly be excited to tell you all about him! Melvin is the newest member of our Tiger team! As a certified therapy dog, Melvin will join his owner, Mrs. Perdue in our elementary library. He studied, tested, and did his Tiger best so he could join our students this fall! We are excited to have him on our team!
