April 14th - 20th is OHSAA Spring Sports Officials Appreciation Week. Every year, these officials attend clinics, participate in rules meetings, and take tests in preparation for the season. During the season, these dedicated men and women take time away from their personal and work schedules and their families to provide our student-athletes the opportunity to play the games they love and contribute to the overall experience our student-athletes receive while participating in educational athletics. Prior to all contests this week, the West Liberty-Salem Athletic Department asks that we all show our appreciation for the time and effort these men and women put into allowing our athletes to compete in the sports they enjoy. Thank you!

Mrs. Brandie Roberts and her college physics class shared a fun STEM activity with first graders this week! The activity used both Math and Science and combines concepts that first graders are currently learning with physics concepts. Physics students explained different concepts of Force and Newton’s Law and ended the activity with a friendly game of Tug of War! Tug of War shows how different levels of force and gravitational weight create differences in Frictional Force. Attached is a video link for first graders in Mrs. Spring/Patton's boys vs. girls tug of war! https://1drv.ms/v/s!ApfkeF_mFKtlmRXHHd--IQU-Q6PT

Fifth Grade students in Mrs. Orahood’s science classes have been studying the eclipse through labs provided by COSI! The first lab they did called "Create a Corona" allowed students to create a chemical reaction that created a yellow burst on paper that they covered with a black disc. The second lab was " Let's Explore UV Light". Students used pipe cleaners and clear UV beads to make a bracelet that reacts to sunlight and turns the beads different colors. They had a great time learning about the upcoming solar eclipse while applying other scientific concepts in their lab work!
