Earlier this week, Mrs. Roberts' Physics class from Edison State visited ColePak, a leading manufacturer of paper partitions in North America. ColePak serves industries such as glass container, automotive, pharmaceutical, and other packaging sectors, operating out of a 300,000-square-foot facility in Urbana, Ohio. The field trip gave students valuable insight into how STEMM skills, like engineering, are applied in various industries. They also learned about the range of career opportunities available, from entry-level positions to more advanced roles that require college degrees. A big thank you to ColePak for being such gracious hosts and providing a tour that was both informative and relatable for our students!

October is Manufacturing Month, and WL-S once again participated in the annual Champaign County Design Challenge, sponsored by local businesses and the Educational Service Center (ESC). The challenge encourages students to explore real-world problem-solving and innovation, both key components of a career in manufacturing.
Since the challenge’s inception, Chris Smucker, art teacher at West Liberty-Salem Middle/High School, has served as the organizer and advisor for our student teams. Under his guidance, the competition has grown from a single group to as many as five teams participating each year. The challenge changes annually, with past projects involving floating designs, sailing machines, stabilizing structures, and more.
This year’s challenge focused on catapult launching, testing students’ engineering skills and creativity. Each school within the county forms their teams to work on the challenge, and a panel of local experts, including engineers, business leaders, and other professionals, visit each school to judge the teams and select one winner to advance to the county competition.
Last Thursday during homeroom, our teams were judged, and we’re excited to announce that the winning team from West Liberty-Salem was:
Max Rudolph, Quentin Rudolph, Nathan Neuerman, Isaiah Reminder, and Clay McAuley!
This talented group earned the opportunity to represent our school at the county competition on Friday at Urbana City Park, where they competed against teams from other county schools and placed 3rd overall!
Several team members, along with supportive students from other teams, attended the event on their day off from school to cheer on their classmates.
A huge congratulations to Max, Quentin, Nathan, Isaiah, and Clay!
Although some team members—Quentin, Isaiah, and Clay—couldn’t attend the county competition, Max, Connor Garman-Ferguson, Nathan Neuerman, Brady Kauffman, and Greyson Horsley proudly represented the team at the event.
Great job, everyone!
We are thrilled to announce our Middle School Students of the Month who have earned the title of October MS Students of the Month for their hard work, dedication, and contributions to the school.

The West Liberty-Salem FFA Chapter recently hosted a Leadership Development Event where a multitude of staff and community members conducted mock job interviews for several FFA students from in and around Champaign County. The FFA Employment Skills Leadership Development Event (LDE) gives student participants a leg up on their future careers by developing the skills needed to seek employment in the industry of agriculture. There were over 50 students who competed the interview contest including three WL-S students, Greyson Horsley, Bayleigh Deam, and Savannah McClintick. Thank you to our many volunteers who interviewed and graded resumes, FFA members who volunteered to help, and to Mrs.Havens for orchestrating the event!

Please help us wish our high school cheerleaders GOOD LUCK at the OHC cheer competition tomorrow! They take the mat at 11:04 at Northeastern High School, and they'd love to bring a crowd! If you are looking for something to do tomorrow, this is a perfect chance to support the girls who support so much at school and in the community! Good luck, Tiger Cheer!
This week, the WLS Varsity Choir performed at the Bellefontaine High School Fall Choral Festival. Choirs from Bellefontaine, WLS, Indian Lake, Calvary Christian, and Jackson Center all performed for each other and for members of the community. The concert ended with all the choirs joining together to sing a piece titled “The Lord Bless You and Keep You.”
We would like to congratulate our singers and the choirs from the other schools in attendance on a great performance! We also would like to thank Mr. Brice Henry for inviting us to take part in the event!
