The marine biology classes visited the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium on Wednesday. They had a behind the scenes tour of the animal health center where they learned about every thing from training animals to volunteer treatments, vaccines, and even blood donation. We learned about the zoo’s animal blood bank, methods for determining blood donation to sick animals, and about all the equipment used to keep the animals well. It was a great day!

Our 8th graders are having a fantastic day in Washington, D.C.! The day began at Arlington National Cemetery, where they visited the graves of John F. Kennedy and the Challenger and Columbia Memorials. Watching the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was a wonderful experience for everyone. Next, the students enjoyed lunch aboard the Spirit of Washington cruise ship, taking in the views of D.C. and enjoying a little dancing with friends! Afterward, they explored the United States Holocaust Museum learning important lessons about history and tolerance. Of course, no trip to D.C. is complete without a photo op at the White House! As the day wraps up, they will head to the WWII, Lincoln, Vietnam, and Korean Memorials. Today has been filled with learning and creating memories with friends and classmates. Stay tuned for more highlights from our trip!

Unlocking Potential at the OASSA Student Leadership Conference West Liberty-Salem juniors Ava Astorino, Caleb Larson, and Tori Douthwaite, along with seniors Ava Johnson, Taran Logwood, and Caleb Hershberger, were selected as part of 120 high school student leaders to attend the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators Conference in Columbus, Ohio. The OASSA Student Leadership Conference is an exciting annual event that brings together students from a cross-section of 30 Ohio high schools identified as student leaders both at school and their communities. In a world where effective leadership is more important than ever, this conference serves as a catalyst for young leaders to discover their potential, connect with like-minded peers, and gain invaluable insights from experienced mentors. Our students, selected by their teachers, engaged in interactive workshops that enhanced skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Breakout sessions are designed to provide students with the tools to return to their schools as better and more energized student leaders. The conference encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new experiences, reminding them of the impact they can have on their communities. Congratulations to our students who were recognized by their teachers for being incredible leaders. The most valuable takeaway from this experience will be the renewed sense of accountability in service, leadership, and the desire to share that excitement in their respective clubs, teams, and organizations.
