West Liberty-Salem participates in the Champaign County Economic Partnership Design Team Challenge for the 8th year in a row! The CCEP challenges county students to become engineers and complete their design challenge for a spot to compete against other local districts! This year, shop and art teacher Chris Smucker had enough interest to have three design teams, the most since the program began in 2016. Andy Hoover is the team engineer. Hoover helps students understand design elements by leading the engineering component. Today, design teams presented their gliders to a panel of judges selected by CCEP for a chance to advance to the County Design Challenge. Judges assessed their presentation and flight to determine a final score. Design team member Connor Garmen-Ferguson told judges, "Our group discovered immediately that our design needed to allow air to move both under the craft and over without having air flow through to slow the design down." They created two gliders to get the perfect successful flight. CCEP judges included Logan Cole, Engineer-ColePak and WLS graduate, Chris Flowers, Champaign County Business Liaison, Connor Bartle, Process Engineer-Weidman, and Andi Mitchell, Business Services, Ohio Means Jobs-Champaign County. Design team made up of Craig Sanford, Max Rudolph, Isaiah Reminder, and Silas King ultimately won and will advance to the Champaign County Economic Partnership Countywide Design Challenge on Friday. They will compete against all other schools in Champaign County. 2023 Design Team Challenge Members include: Taryn Bradley, Aaron Campbell, Connor Garman-Ferguson, Caleb Hershberger, Joy Hudson, Sami King, Teagon Miller, Silas King, Isaiah Reminder, Max Rudolph, Quentin Rudolph, and Craig Stanford. Congratulations to our winners, and great job to the entire Team!
